The Social Work Practice and Development program at Mwimbi University is designed for people interested in the quality of life who want to empower people in different circumstances within the community. Students acquire knowledge about human and social behavior and develop skills to empower and work in prevention and at the intervention level with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities in our society. The program focuses on knowledge, skills and attitudes to support individuals and strengthen communities within their systemic environment and network. These are achieved through communication skills in the languages spoken in Zambia, counselling, policy practice, and advocating for social and environmental justice, equality and human rights. The main goal of this program is to contribute to the continuous improvement of the community’s quality of life. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work Practice and Development is a four (4 year program offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The programme is designed basing on the needs of the society (Africa and Zambia in particular) to have as many as social workers to solve severe social problems having been faced.
These include scourge of poverty, food insecurity, rampant unemployment, deadly diseases (communicable & non-communicable), homelessness, and social dysfunctions which are threatening social development and wellbeing of the people.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme:
By the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
- Uphold the principles and methods of social work.
- Observe ethical values and code of ethics that govern different social relationships in society, especially in human service delivery.
- Take up careers in government, the private sector, and non – governmental organizations for sustainable social development.
- Engage in professional practice in social work.
- Develop and implement sound social research that contributes to Social Work theory, knowledge and research-based practice for sustainable social development.
Programme Structure
The programme requires the completion of 120 credit hours. The type of study for this programme is Coursework and research which means students has to complete all the core courses before registering for Graduation
